Water purification tablets are used to chemically disinfect water from untreated sources for drinking purposes. — In-game description
Chlorine Tablets are used to disinfect unclean water in Canteens, PET Bottles, Gasoline Canisters, and Water Pouches. These tablets cannot be stacked in your inventory (like matches, for example).
Water is unclean if it comes from a pond or river. It is not necessary to use these tablets on water which comes from a water pump. Drinking unclean water can cause the player to contract Cholera.
